Prodredge Engineering Limited is specially geared to address and remedy some of the recurrent flooding problems. The Company has skills’ sets, the intimate knowledge of many of the waterways and the required equipment to remedy the problems of silting of the waterway and the clogging/flooding that occurs. All projects are undertaken in an ecologically sensitive manner to prevent environmental degradation. We are specialists in the areas of hydraulic dredging, mechanical dredging, ponds construction and shoreline protection. We have personnel with the required professional experience and training both in-house and as consultants to drive our projects.

Sedimentation problems in our waterways cause major floods annually in the low lying and coastal areas of Trinidad. This is further exacerbated by the indiscriminate dumping of garbage, scrapped cars, old appliances, mattresses, tyres and other articles in and around the watercourses. At the commencement of the rainy season annually millions of dollars are spent in emergency remedial infrastructural works, relief work to alleviate the problems of flooded homes and to purchase basic supplies for affected families. At times thousands of people stranded or marooned resulting in further losses where untold man-hours and scarce resources are used to bring temporary relief to those affected. This problem must be addressed in a very pro-active manner and among other things, timely dredging and cleaning of the watercourses; building of retention ponds and shoreline management must be implemented. 

Mechanical dredging is tailored to each site’s specific needs and generally requires the use of a long-reach backhoe or dragline to scrape the unwanted sediment from the waterways and deposit it on the embankments. They can then be seeded/planted to improve and shore up the embankments. This provides an economical and attractive solution for the long-term upgrade of the watercourses. Hydraulic dredging is removal of sediment, which has been agitated, and the material pumped to a remote site. Retention ponds and flood/sluice gates are being addressed at as one of the solutions to control the flow-rate in these watercourses. In addition, these ponds could be further developed to add value and provide recreational opportunities such as fishing or water sources for farmers in the dry season.

Trinidad’s southwest region has numerous examples of shoreline erosion, which cannot be recovered. Protecting the shoreline with riprap, vegetation or a combination of both will keep the shoreline looking beautiful and last for many years. Prodredge Engineering Limited has the expertise and the required equipment to do shoreline management.

Our equipment list is substantial, some of what we own are, Dragline Crane, Hydraulic Dredger, 2 Section 40’ x 11’9” x 2’ Deck Marlin Barge, Air Ranger Airboat, Aluminium Boat, Trailers, Jet Ski, Hiab Truck and Farmtrac Tractor. Our field office and equipment is located at 91-93 St. John Trace, Avocat which is approx. 300ft from  the sluice gate and river. 

As noted above, we understand the cause of the recurrent problem of flooding and we know what must be done to alleviate this problem. We have the expertise and knowledge as well as the appropriate equipment to do the remedial work.
